The formula

Percentage → 4.0 (100-point scale)

GPA = percentage ÷ 25

A 100-point percentage maps linearly onto the 4.0 scale. For a 20-point scale, divide by 5; for a 10-point scale, multiply by 0.4.

10-point CGPA → 4.0

GPA = CGPA × 0.4

The most common rule of thumb (8.0 → 3.2), used by many credential evaluators.

Worked example

Your transcript shows 85% (100-point scale)
GPA = 85 ÷ 25 = 3.40
Your friend's 8.5/10 → 8.5 × 0.4 = 3.40

Both land at 3.4/4.0 — but note that different universities use different tables, so treat any conversion as an estimate until the evaluator confirms.

Common mistakes

Assuming all universities convert the same way — many publish their own tables; use theirs when available.
Converting percentages out of different full marks — 85% on a 20-point scale means something entirely different.
Using the 4.3 scale (with A+) interchangeably with 4.0 — pick the scale your target university uses.
