Methodology: the overall band is the mean of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band using the official IELTS rule (x.25 → x.5, x.75 → next whole band). This is an estimate — only the test center’s verified result is official.
Rounding examples: mean 6.25 → band 6.5 · mean 6.75 → band 7.0 · mean 6.125 → band 6.0. All four sections must be from the same test sitting for an official estimate.

The official rule: average the four bands, then round to the nearest half band (6.25 → 6.5, 6.75 → 7.0).

- Mean = (8 + 7 + 6.5 + 7) ÷ 4 = 7.125
- Round to nearest half band → 7.0
Estimated overall band: 7.0. (A mean of 7.25 would round UP to 7.5 — the rounding always favors the test taker at the .25/.75 boundaries.)
Common mistakes
- Averaging without rounding — many universities state a minimum overall band; a 6.75 mean officially rounds to 7.0, not 6.5.
- Using section scores from different test attempts — the overall band is computed per sitting.
- Treating this as an official score — only the test center's verified result is official.

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

Is this calculator official?
No — it's an estimate based on the official rounding methodology. Your official result comes from the test center and may differ if section scores are verified differently.
What if my section scores are uneven?
The overall band smooths them — e.g. 9, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 averages to 7.125 → 7.0. Universities also look at section minimums, so keep an eye on your weakest section.
What overall band do universities require?
Commonly 6.0–7.0 for undergraduate and 6.5–7.5 for postgraduate, with minimum section scores (often 6.0–6.5). Always check the specific program.
Can I convert my raw score (correct answers out of 40) to a band?
Yes — switch to raw-score mode. IELTS marks every question out of 40 with no penalty for wrong answers. Listening uses one conversion table for both modules; Reading uses separate tables for Academic and General Training.
Is the Academic Reading conversion different from General Training?
Yes. General Training Reading requires more correct answers for the same band — e.g. 30 correct is band 7.0 Academic but band 6.0 General Training. The raw-score mode applies the correct table automatically.
Are raw-score conversions official?
They follow the commonly published IELTS conversion tables (Cambridge / British Council / IDP), but boundaries can vary by ±1 mark between test versions, so treat the result as an estimate — only the test center's verified result is official.
