CGPA Calculator

CGPA (cumulative GPA) is your average across every credit you've completed so far — all semesters combined. Enter your previous CGPA and earned credits, add this term's courses, and see how the term moves your overall average (including whether it goes up or down).

How it works

  1. Optional: enter your previous CGPA and the total credits earned so far (from your transcript).
  2. Add this semester's courses with credit hours and letter grades.
  3. The current term's GPA is computed from the courses.
  4. Term grade points are merged with your prior points: prior CGPA × prior credits.
  5. The combined CGPA is displayed with the exact change (delta) this term causes.

The formula

CGPA formula

CGPA = (prior CGPA × prior credits + Σ term grade points) ÷ (prior credits + Σ term credits)

Each semester's points pool together. A strong term with few credits moves a large CGPA less than a strong term with many credits.

Worked example

Worked example — joining a 2.9 CGPA with a strong term

  1. Prior: CGPA 2.90 over 60 credits → 2.90 × 60 = 174.0 points
  2. This term: 15 credits, GPA 3.60 → 15 × 3.60 = 54.0 points
  3. Total points = 174.0 + 54.0 = 228.0; total credits = 60 + 15 = 75

New CGPA = 228.0 ÷ 75 = 3.04 — a +0.14 improvement.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging GPAs instead of pooling points — (2.90 + 3.60) ÷ 2 = 3.25 is wrong because the term has fewer credits.
  • Forgetting previously failed courses' credit hours in your transcript total.
  • Entering your current CGPA from memory rather than your official transcript.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA normally describes one term; CGPA describes everything to date. The same math is used, but CGPA's denominator includes all prior credits, so a single term moves it less.

How many credits should I enter for prior credits?

The total number of credit hours you have already completed, excluding the current term — the figure printed on your transcript.

Can a bad semester ruin my CGPA?

It lowers it proportionally to the credits involved. A 15-credit bad term moves a 60-credit history less than a 3-credit one. Use the semester GPA planner to see what you'd need to recover.

Does CGPA matter for jobs and grad school?

For many graduate programs, yes — most ask for a minimum CGPA (often 3.0 in the US). Many employers in engineering and finance also screen by CGPA. Check each application's requirements.
