WAM vs GPA: Australian University Marks Explained

Australian universities report results in two different ways: a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or a Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 7-point scale, and some publish both. Which one you see depends on your institution, and which one matters depends on what you are applying for.

WAM: the weighted average mark

A WAM is your actual marks (out of 100, or a scaled mark) averaged with credit-point weighting:

WAM = Σ (mark × credit points) ÷ Σ credit points

Example: 78 in a 12-credit-point unit and 65 in a 6-credit-point unit gives (78×12 + 65×6) ÷ 18 = 73.7. WAM preserves small differences between marks, which is why universities use it for honours entry, scholarships and competitive rankings.

GPA on the 7-point scale

• HD (High Distinction): 80–100% · 7 points
• D (Distinction): 70–79% · 6 points
• C (Credit): 60–69% · 5 points
• P (Pass): 50–59% · 4 points
• N (Fail): below 50% · usually 0 points

The GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points. A few institutions use 4.0 or 5.0 GPA scales instead of the 7-point scale, so always check the scale named on your transcript.

Which universities use which

The common pattern: many Australian universities report a WAM, several well-known ones use the 7-point GPA, and some publish both. Because institutions differ, your transcript legend and student handbook are the reliable sources, and external comparisons should always name the scale.

Why the difference matters

• WAM distinguishes 79 from 80, which a GPA scale collapses into one band.
• Honours entry and some scholarships use WAM thresholds or GPA equivalents.
• Employers and postgrad admissions usually state which measure they want, so reporting the wrong one can hurt an application.

Converting between WAM and GPA

There is no universal official conversion. Common approximations map the 7-point bands onto marks (as above), but a 73 WAM could be a 6.0 or 6.5 GPA depending on the institution's table. Treat any conversion as an estimate, and use the university's published table when one exists.
