How to Calculate Your IELTS Overall Band (Official Rounding Rules)

Your IELTS result sheet shows one overall band (like 6.5 or 7.0) plus four section bands. Universities often set minimums for both — so it's worth understanding exactly how the overall band is derived from the sections.

The rule

The overall band is the mean of the four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band.

overall = round(mean × 2) ÷ 2

Where the rounding matters

• A mean of 6.25 rounds UP to 6.5 — the .25 boundary favors you.
• A mean of 6.75 rounds UP to 7.0 — the .75 boundary favors you too.
• A mean of 6.125 rounds DOWN to 6.0 — only the .25 and .75 boundaries round up.

Worked example

Scores of Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.0:

mean = 28.5 ÷ 4 = 7.125 → rounded to 7.0

Change the Writing score to 7.0 and the mean becomes 7.25 → overall 7.5. One half-band in one section lifted the overall band by half a band.

Two honest caveats

• Section scores are whole or half bands only (6.0, 6.5, 7.0 …) — you can't score 6.75 in a section.
• This math is the published methodology, but only the test center's verified result is official. Use this to set targets, not to predict your certificate.
