Semester GPA Planner

Set a CGPA goal and work backwards. The Semester GPA Planner takes your current CGPA and earned credits, your target, and the credits still to come — then calculates the average GPA you need across those remaining credits.

Max 4 on this scale

This term and future terms

Required average GPA

3.9

average GPA needed over your remaining 30 credits

How it works

  1. Enter your current CGPA and the credits you've completed.
  2. Set the target CGPA you want by graduation or by a certain point.
  3. Enter the number of credits remaining (this term + future terms).
  4. The planner returns the average GPA required for the remaining credits.
  5. If the target is already secure — or mathematically impossible — it tells you clearly, with the maximum achievable CGPA.

The formula

Required average

required = (target × total credits − current CGPA × earned credits) ÷ remaining credits

Work backwards from the final target: the points you still need, divided by the credits you have left to earn them.

Worked example

Worked example — can I reach a 3.5?

  1. Current: CGPA 3.30 over 60 credits; target: 3.50; remaining credits: 30
  2. Points needed = 3.50 × 90 − 3.30 × 60 = 315 − 198 = 117
  3. Required average = 117 ÷ 30 = 3.90

You'd need a 3.90 average over the remaining 30 credits — demanding but possible with mostly A/A− grades.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you can recover a low CGPA with one perfect term — with many earned credits, remaining credits have less leverage.
  • Ignoring the 4.3 scale — institutions that offer A+ can push the maximum achievable CGPA above 4.0.
  • Forgetting failed or repeated courses that still carry credit weight.

Frequently asked questions

What if the required GPA is above 4.0?

The planner marks the target as impossible and shows the maximum CGPA you can still reach — useful for re-setting a realistic goal.

Can this help me plan for graduation honors?

Yes. Set your target to your institution's honors threshold (often 3.5–3.7) and plan the required per-term GPA across your remaining semesters.

How is this different from the regular GPA calculator?

The GPA calculator measures where you are. This planner works forward from a goal to tell you what you need — it's the same formula used in reverse.
