Reading Time Calculator

Paste any text and find out how long it takes to read — and to present. Based on standard adult reading rates (≈238 words per minute) with an adjustable speed slider, this is the tool to check before you write a script, prepare a talk, or decide if a paper is worth skimming.

Reading time uses your selected speed (238 wpm); speaking time uses 130 wpm — the pace of a clear presentation.

How it works

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Word count is computed instantly.
  3. Reading time uses ≈238 wpm (adjustable 100–400 wpm).
  4. Speaking time uses ≈130 wpm — the pace of a clear presentation.
  5. Adjust the slider to match your own pace for a personal estimate.

The formula

Reading time

minutes = words ÷ wpm

The default 238 wpm is the average adult silent-reading rate for typical text.

Speaking time

minutes = words ÷ 130

130 wpm is a comfortable presentation pace — fast enough to stay engaging, slow enough to be understood.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Your presentation script: 520 words
  2. Reading time = 520 ÷ 238 ≈ 2.2 minutes
  3. Speaking time = 520 ÷ 130 = 4.0 minutes

Plan for a 4-minute talk — and with the default pacing, a 5-minute slot leaves comfortable room for transitions.

Common mistakes

  • Planning a talk by reading time instead of speaking time — people speak about half as fast as they read.
  • Forgetting pauses — real presentations have breaths, transitions and audience reactions; add ~10–15% buffer.
  • Ignoring technical text — formulas, code and dense jargon read slower than 238 wpm; drop the slider for those.

Frequently asked questions

How fast do people read?

Average adult silent reading is roughly 200–260 wpm depending on the text. This calculator defaults to 238 wpm, and the slider lets you adjust.

How many words is a 5-minute presentation?

At 130 wpm, about 650 words. For a 10-minute talk, roughly 1,300 words. Practice pacing with the speaking estimate.
