Word Counter

Essays have word limits; presentations have time limits. Paste or type your text and watch words, characters, sentences and paragraphs count themselves — with reading time, speaking time and your most-used keywords as a bonus.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Every metric updates instantly as you type — no buttons, no waiting.
  3. Word count is whitespace-based, so it handles any language and punctuation.
  4. Reading and speaking times use standard adult rates (238 and 130 words per minute).
  5. Top keywords (excluding common stop words) show what your text emphasizes.

The formula

Reading time

minutes ≈ words ÷ 238

Average adult silent-reading rate. Speaking time uses ≈ 130 wpm — the pace of a clear presentation.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. A 5-paragraph essay of 620 words with 3,850 characters
  2. Reading time ≈ 620 ÷ 238 ≈ 2.6 minutes
  3. Speaking time ≈ 620 ÷ 130 ≈ 4.8 minutes

About 5 minutes to present — right in range for a typical class talk.

Common mistakes

  • Using a tool that counts words by spaces — double spaces then inflate counts. This counter splits on whitespace runs.
  • Forgetting that word limits usually include everything in the document.
  • Ignoring the speaking time for presentations — it's often the binding constraint.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

Any run of non-whitespace characters — so “student's”, “e.g.” and “2026” each count as one word, matching the convention used by most university word limits.

Does the word counter work for other languages?

Yes. Because counting is whitespace-based, it works for any language, including Arabic, Chinese (where word separation differs — counts approximate) and Urdu.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser — your essay never leaves your device. This is true of every StudentKit tool.
