Random Study Topic Picker

Decision paralysis is a real study killer — ten minutes choosing what to revise is ten minutes not revising. List your topics, give each a weight (1–5 by importance or weakness), and let the picker make the call. Weighted picks mean your hardest, most important subjects get chosen more often.

Weighted pick: a topic with weight 5 is chosen five times as often as weight 1.

How it works

  1. Add the topics you could study right now.
  2. Set a weight for each: 1 = low priority, 5 = must-do.
  3. Press Pick — a topic is chosen with probability proportional to its weight.
  4. Study that topic for one Pomodoro, then come back and pick again.
  5. Use shuffle mode to randomize the whole list when you want to power through.

The formula

Weighted pick

P(topic) = weight ÷ Σ weights

A topic with weight 5 is picked five times as often as a topic with weight 1 — chance with a strategy.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Topics: Calculus (5), Data Structures (4), English essay (2)
  2. Total weight 11 → Calculus has a 45% chance per pick
  3. Press pick — repeat until you've covered a full session.

Over 10 picks, Calculus appears ~5 times, Data Structures ~4, English ~2 — exactly the proportions you planned.

Common mistakes

  • Including topics you can't actually study right now — the picker only helps if every option is doable.
  • Giving everything weight 5 — that's the same as no weighting.
  • Re-picking forever — decide before you press: one pick, then study.

Frequently asked questions

Is the pick truly random?

Yes, but weighted — the randomness is real, and the weights bias the odds toward the topics you marked as important.

Can I use it for non-study decisions?

Of course — any list works: what to eat, what to watch, which assignment to start.

What if I don't like the result?

That's useful information! Disliking the pick often reveals what you actually wanted to study — go with that.
