How to Reach 75% Attendance (When You're Already Below)

StudentKit TeamAug 9, 2026· 4 min read

The attendance report says 68% and the requirement is 75%. Panic is not a plan — math is. Recovery is possible while enough classes remain, and this guide shows exactly how to calculate whether you can still make it.

The recovery formula

To finish at target percentage T with H classes held, A attended, and R remaining:

needed = ceil(T ÷ 100 × (H + R) − A)

Worked example: attended 34 of 50 held, 10 remaining, target 75% → need ceil(0.75 × 60 − 34) = ceil(45 − 34) = 11 — but only 10 classes remain, so the target is out of reach. Your maximum becomes (34 + 10) ÷ 60 = 73.3%.

What to do when it's mathematically impossible

  • Talk to your instructor immediately — some allow makeup assignments or documented medical exemptions.
  • Check your university's policy on condoned absences and the appeals process.
  • Plan for the worst case: know what being barred from the exam means for your grade and your timeline.

What to do when recovery IS possible

The math above gives you the exact number. Add a buffer of 1–2 classes, mark every remaining date in your calendar with an alert, and treat attendance like an exam you can't reschedule — because it is.

Avoid these traps

  • Counting on classes being cancelled to fix your percentage — cancellations shrink the denominator and can help, but you can't rely on them.
  • Trusting your own tally over the official record — reconcile your count with the register every few weeks.
  • Waiting until the last two weeks — the denominator is largest then, so each absence hurts the most.
