How Long Should You Study Per Day? (Honest Numbers for Students)

“How many hours should I study?” has a frustratingly honest answer: it depends on when your exams are, how many subjects you carry, and what your attention span allows. But there are real numbers to work with — here they are.
The sustainable range
For most students, 2–4 hours of focused study per day is sustainable during exam preparation. Beyond roughly 5–6 hours, quality drops sharply — study becomes re-reading, which feels productive and isn't. Elite athletes of focus (med students in exam season) push higher, but they train up to it.
The budget calculation
Work backwards from your exam date:
total hours = days until exam × hours per day
With 14 days and 3 honest hours a day, that's 42 hours. Split across 4 subjects that's ~10.5 hours each — enough for a serious revision pass over weak topics, not enough to learn a subject from zero. If your budget is thin, prioritize ruthlessly.
Quality beats quantity
- One focused session with no phone beats three distracted hours.
- Active recall (practice questions, explaining aloud) beats passive re-reading by a wide margin.
- Regular short sessions beat irregular marathons — spacing is one of the most replicated findings in memory research.
How to structure the hours
Work in 1.5-hour blocks with real breaks, using a timer to protect your attention. The Pomodoro technique (25 on / 5 off) is the simplest way to start — it externalizes the decision to keep going.
Signs you're overdoing it
Reading the same paragraph three times, watching the clock, or feeling exhausted before you start are signals to cut the day short — not to push through. Rest is part of the plan.
