The formula

Linear conversions

value × factor₁ × (1 ÷ factor₂)

Most units convert through a shared base unit (e.g. meters, kilograms, joules) using fixed conversion factors.

Temperature (offset conversions)

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · K = °C + 273.15

Temperature scales have different zero points, so they need an offset — not just a multiplier.

Common mistakes

  • Treating temperature like a ratio — “twice as hot” doesn't work in °C or °F; only Kelvin is a true ratio scale.
  • Confusing US gallons with imperial gallons — they differ by about 20%.
  • Mixing kW and kWh: kW is power (rate), kWh is energy (amount).
